Christine Higgins Nelson

Christine Higgins Nelson, 94, of 309 Cannon Road, wife of the late Lewis ‘Buster’ Nelson, quietly departed this life Tuesday, September 24, 2019 at The Hospice and Palliative Care of the Piedmont. Born April 08, 1925 in Troy, SC, she was the daughter of the late Luellen Higgins Sr. and the late Lula Brunson Higgins.

Christine received her education in the Edgefield public schools and Brewer High School. She was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She served as a member of the Springfield Baptist Church and was one of the last original members of the Springfield Gospel Choir.

She was preceded in death by one son, Alexander ‘Buddy’ Nelson and siblings James Higgins, Charles Higgins, Luellen Higgins, Jr., Benice Quarles, Johnnie Mae Peterson, Alma Hamilton, and Willie R. Nash.

She leaves behind to cherish her memories, daughters, Alma (Charles) Downs of Upper Marlboro, MD, and Sandra Watts of Philadelphia, PA; sons Louis L. Nelson and Charles S. Nelson of the home; stepsons Alfonso (Ida) Parks of Greenwood and John (Babbs) Moss of Marietta, GA; one sister-in-law, Bessie L. Nelson of Greenwood; grandchildren, Retecher (Christopher) Todd, Duvene Watts, Germaine Nelson, Marisha Nelson, Kyle Watts, Kimberly (Wayne) Johnson, Tyra Downs, Lavelle White, Yashica White, Lutavious Elmore, Shaneeque Elmore, Janisha Elmore, LaKecia Nelson, Rakevious Parks, and Nykia Parks; adopted granddaughters Gabrielle Lanier, Cassandra Theodore and Sandi Richardson; special niece Barbara Thompson; special cousin Lilly Holmes; thirty great-grandchildren; twelve great-great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services are noon on Tuesday, October 1, 2019 at Springfield Baptist Church in Edgefield, SC, with Reverend Craig Myers, presiding and Reverend Arthur Kemp, officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
