Rev. David E. “Sonny” Morton Jr.

Rev. David E. “Sonny” Morton Jr., 80, of 102 Rhett Court, widower of Viola Rice Morton, passed away on Wednesday, July 10, 2019 at his home. Born in Hodges, he was the son of the late David Morton Sr. and the late Florence Freeman Morton. He was preceded in death by one son, James Nesbitt, who was reared in the home. He was in the United States Military, where he received a Purple Heart, natural defense service medal, Vietnam service medal, Vietnam Campaign medal with DVC 60, Parachutist Badge, Bronze star medal, and expert (rifle M-14) good conduct medal. He was also a senior non-commissioned officer command and staff course at Fort Jackson in 1972 and a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church.

He leaves to cherish his memories four sons, David Morton of Greenwood, Daniel Morton of Washington, DC, Dennis (Tammie) Morton of Aiken, and Coy (Jessica) Nesbitt of Washington DC, who was also reared in the home; four daughters, Penokie (Clarence) Garvin of Aiken, SC, Pamela (Larry) Cherry of Greenwood, Donna Allen of Pittsburgh, PA, reared in the home, and Genaya (Riko) Jones, both of Greenwood; three sisters, Catherine Rice of Hodges, Juanita Washington of Greenwood and Dorothy (Hugh) Belcher of Mauldin; twenty-nine grandchildren; twenty-nine great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends to mourn his passing.

Funeral services are 11:00 AM on Friday, July 19, 2019 at Mars Hill Baptist Church in Hodges, conducted by Rev. Tommy Stanford. Rev. Morton will be placed in the church at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
